Growing up, I was an only child for six and a half years. My parents would travel around a bit with me, but the real fun began when my younger brother, Thomas, was born. It was then, that I got my very first travel buddy.
Today, Thomas turns twenty-one, so I thought there was no better way to honor our travels over the years than with a post that keeps him in mind.
Our family would travel mainly along the East Coast of The United States. From road trips up to Massachusetts or all the way down to Florida, and everywhere in between, there was no shortage of laughter in the car. Like kids usually do, we would drive our parents crazy with Mad Libs or with our crazy songs made-up songs.
But, it was our road trip in Europe that left memories that will stay with me for a life time. We were together for over three weeks and were able to bond unlike ever before. Whether we were stuck in hours of traffic in Italy, making up songs about fish in Croatia, or battling the stomach bug in Ireland, we tried our best to make it through with a smile and encouraged each other to do the same.
Though its been years since we’ve been on the road together, and our more recent travels take us on different paths, I hope to one day make more memories on the road with my very first travel companion. Because the memories we’ve made together so far are ones that I know neither one of us will ever forget.

very sweet. and I love the photos you post, as always!
I know we have even better ones, but I thought of the idea for this a little too late to scan them all in! 🙂
Shed a tear….great memories.
Really great memories! 🙂
This is so amazing. Love it!
Thanks! 🙂
Love the pictures with your little brother. Not so little now…
Not so little at all! He was so adorable! Haha!
Lovely post and a great idea too – sorry to hear you were sick in Ireland though!:(
Oh, no worries! Think we caught it from our cousins. Ireland is our second home, so it wasn’t as bad as getting sick abroad in a hotel or anything like that. 🙂
you are a sweet sister. some of my fondest traveling memories from childhood are silly things done with my sibs!
Thanks! Yup, those were the best memories! 🙂
Awesome that you guys have so many memories. My brother and I had some great adventures as kids also, and hopefully many more ahead…
Lots of good ones! It’s so nice to be able to share them with someone. 🙂
Heartwarming. My older sister has always been my most frequent and best travel buddy.
Aww, that’s great, John! Us older sisters are good for something! 🙂
LOVED mad libs! this is so cute!
We loved it too!! My Dad, not so much, lol!
What a sweet post! It’s so great that you and your brother were/are able to do so much traveling together. Here’s to many more memories!
Thanks, Tawny! Hope there’s more to come! 🙂
wow, what a great post… and great photos. we never forget our first, glad you have such wonderful memories with your brother. hopefully your roads of travel will lead you back together for yet another adventure…
stay adventurous, Craig
Thanks, Craig! I hope so, been a while since we’ve traveled together. 🙂
A very touching post with excellent pictures. Your brother is lucky to have such a caring and fun sister growing up. I am sure this post made his day!
Thanks, Ted! He is a wonderful brother too! I’m very lucky to have him. 🙂
This is so sweet! What a great sis you are. 🙂 I’ve traveled with my brother before too ad would love to do it again.
Thanks, Pola! Brothers make great travel buddies!
What a great way to honor your brother. I did a similar thing for my dad’s 70th birthday this year. He wouldn’t take a gift, so I wrote him a post. I’m very impressed with how well y’all seemed to get along. My older brother and I are 5 years apart and we fought like crazy all the time, but especially on vacation. I’m jealous!
Yea, for some reason we never seemed to have anything to fight about! I’m very lucky, as I’ve seen many sibling fights over the years. 🙂
Erin, very sweet. I have an older sister who adores her baby brother (as much as he does right back!). We are planning a trip to Spain together to celebrate a milestone birthday for her! Neat way to remember and celebrate your first travel buddy!
Thanks, Raul! Aww, love that your sister feels the same way I do about her baby brother and vis versa. 🙂 I also love that you are planning a trip to Spain together! Hope that me and Thomas can plan a trip together really soon. 🙂
