Just yesterday was the Nomading Film Festival in New York City, and Jeff and I decided to head in for the event. Located in the backyard of Hostelling International-NY, the festival felt more like an outdoor family barbecue than a film festival, which was a welcome feel.
I spend much of my life day-dreaming, and each time it’s about where I want to visit next. One day it’s Bhutan, the next it’s Morocco. Another day it’s Peru, and then it’s Ghana. The list is always growing and sources of inspiration are constantly surrounding me. I imagine my life as a permanent traveler, and never see an end to my adventures, as I believe that it is a part of who I am – something that I know will never change.
Several years ago, in the beginning of my love affair with the world, I would cut out pictures of countries, stuffing them into my journal. This journal was less a chronicle of my life, and more a place filled with lists of the countries I planned to one day visit. As I learned about new places, I would add them, knowing that one day I would visit the countries I once wrote down. And, as I visited each place on my list, I would check them off with excitement, realizing that I was beginning to reach my dreams and see the world.
India is a place that I have wanted to visit for as long as I can remember and a culture I’ve been in love with for years. Everything about India has fascinated me, even though not everyone feels the way I do about the country. I love the music, the food, the clothing, the culture…everything India has to offer.
Just the other day, I happened to find this video, by Mike Matas. It sums up a thirty day journey through India through three thousand pictures in three minutes. This video makes me want to visit India more than I originally had, and I can’t see how anyone could watch it and not want to visit the subcontinent. It is truly an incredible place.
It is no secret that I am a hopeless romantic. I fall in love with all things about life, and travel heightens those experiences, making me fall in love with life even further. But, this time of year is especially romantic. The stores are ready for Valentine’s Day, and there’s the cold chill in the air that makes you want to cuddle up in the arms of a loved one. Everything about February evokes feelings of first love.
I’ve always been inspired to travel, and fall in love, by movies, and while I posted a list of five travel romance movies in October, the list has grown over the past few months.
Maybe not all of them are perfect love stories, but these are stories of romance taking place all over the globe. Once in a while, you just need a good love story, and if it’s set somewhere exotic and far away from home, it’s even better. So, whether you have a valentine or not, if you love travel these movies will make you fall in love with the world, and love, all over again.
This week’s inspiration is Paris. It’s one of the most romantic cities in the world, and lately, it’s been on my mind. Day and night, I seem to dream of walking the city streets and overlooking The Seine, sitting in Ladurée eating macarons, lounging in a park reading a book, eating fresh bread with cheese and a glass of wine, kissing someone under The Eiffel Tower. No matter what I do, I can’t seem to get The City of Lights out of my head.
This week’s inspiration comes from a series of three videos commissioned by STA Travel and created by, “3 guys, 44 days, 11 countries, 18 flights, 38 thousand miles.”
Each video is only about one minute long, but each is long enough to inspire anyone’s next journey. To see all that these three have seen and experienced is motivation to get out there and not just explore the world, but to experience it.
For me, each day brings something that inspires me to travel. Whether it’s a television show, movie, song, story, poem, picture, or video, I am always looking for the next place to day-dream about until I am able to actually visit. I would spend my life traveling the world if I could, and until that can happen, I surround myself with sounds and visuals that motivate me to get closer to that dream.
Since this is something I do on a daily basis, I thought that it might be fun for me to have an “Inspiration of the Week” on my blog. This will allow me to share what inspires me, while hopefully, inspiring you to leave the comforts of home and hit the road.
