Southeast Asia Countdown: One Week

Well, it’s finally arrived: the one week countdown for my almost month-long trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. I couldn’t be more ready, or excited, to head to Asia.

While I usually never plan for my travels, I couldn’t help but look up all of the excitement that I’ll be having during the next three and a half weeks. I’ve dreamed for years of heading to these countries, so this trip is a dream come true.

What I’m Most Looking Forward to:

1. Halong Bay, Vietnam
While telling people that I’d be headed to Vietnam, they’d often ask me why. It’s not until I show them a picture of Halong Bay, that they understand why, it is absolutely stunning. I’m hoping that we’ll be able to book a boat cruise on a junk.

2. Food
The food in these three countries completely excites me. I know that it will be vastly different than the food I’ve had at home in America, but I’m looking forward to the different flavors I’ll get to experience. Articles I’ve read on Thailand’s street food and Vietnam’s unique edible delights have made my mouth water. I cannot wait to try absolutely everything around me. I also plan on visiting Friends, a restaurants that employees and supports former street children.

3. Angkor Wat, Cambodia
I’ve read about Angkor Wat years ago, and made it a must-see destination immediately. It’s hard not to immediately fall in love with the site – an abandoned temple, overgrown with trees. I cannot wait to see it in person, hopefully at sunrise or sunset.

4. Shopping in Markets
In it’s March 18, 2011, Asian Odysseys article, The New York Times made me most excited about the shopping I’d be doing. From the Russian Market in Phnom Penh to Psar Krom in Siem Reap to Nang Leong in Bangkok. Plus, the boutiques in Hanoi around St. Joesph’s Cathedral. It’s a shopaholic’s dream!

5. Beaches
I have seen nothing but beautiful pictures of the beaches lining these three countries. Unfortunately, on this venture, I will not be able to make it to Phuket, somewhere I’ve longed to go for ages. However, there are plenty of beautiful beaches along the coasts of Cambodia and Vietnam. I’m hoping to visit either Kep or Sihanoukville in Cambodia. Finally, Nha Trang in Vietnam and, hopefully, Phu Quoc Island because from what I’ve read it’s a must.

While I’m looking forward to all of these adventures and places, I’m most excited about the unknown, about stepping off the plane and knowing I have almost a month to soak up three different cultures. I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for me and my friends.

I’ll be blogging from my trip, so be sure to follow my adventures starting July 4th!

  1. Great itinerary! I myself am going to those three countries in the third week of July. So, I guess I’ll be dropping by again to your blog in the near future to get more updated information about the countries.
